On April 30, 2025, at 20:45, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Stockholm was subjected to a criminal arson attack. The perpetrator placed two gallons of flammable liquid (40 Liters of gasoline) at the entrance of the Embassy, setting the main door on fire. The flames quickly spread inside the premises, severely damaging the Embassy’s interior, including wall panels and electrical wiring.
Thanks to the swift and courageous response of the Embassy staff, the fire was contained before it could claim lives, particularly the guards who were in immediate danger. This attack, however, caused considerable stress among the personnel and resulted in significant material damage to the Embassy’s infrastructure.
Regrettably, this is not the first time that the Embassy has been targeted by criminal elements. On 23 January, 2024, a group of assailants violently attacked the Embassy, physically assaulting a member of the diplomatic staff. On both occasions, the perpetrators shamelessly recorded their criminal actions and disseminated the footage via media outlets and social media platforms, clearly demonstrating premeditation and intent to intimidate.
The failure to prosecute the previous offenders has regrettably contributed to an environment that emboldens further aggression. This trend of impunity and Iranophobia created by certain circles in Sweden, has paved the way for repeated violations against the Embassy and its staff. The recent attack is a direct consequence of that permissive environment — an attempt not only to destroy property but to endanger human life.
We have been informed that the main suspect involved in the recent attack has been apprehended by the police. We therefore expect the Swedish authorities to take firm legal action against all those responsible, in accordance with Sweden’s obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In our diplomatic engagements — both in Tehran and Stockholm — the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently emphasized the responsibility of the host state to ensure the security and inviolability of diplomatic missions. We urge the Swedish government to fulfill its international commitments and to prevent any further threats against our mission and personnel, bring those responsible to justice, and consider necessary steps to provide compensation.
